What Makes This Beach Special

Veligandu Island is the Maldives at its most concentrated and most beautiful: a small oval of coral rock barely 300 metres long and 100 metres wide, entirely encircled by white sand beach and surrounded by a shallow turquoise lagoon before dropping away to the dark blue of the Indian Ocean. The island is so small that you can walk the complete beach circuit in under 15 minutes. That very smallness is part of what makes it extraordinary — the sensation of being on an island so tiny that the sea is visible from almost any point on the sand, with water of different colours visible simultaneously in different directions, is a specific and irreplaceable Maldivian experience.

The island hosts a single resort — Veligandu Island Resort & Spa — which occupies the entire landmass. This one-island, one-resort model, foundational to the Maldives tourism concept, ensures that the beach, the reef, and the lagoon are shared only with fellow guests. The resort has approximately 80 beach villas and overwater bungalows, keeping the island’s human density low relative to its size.

The house reef at Veligandu is one of the most celebrated aspects of the island. It begins within swimming distance of the beach — in some sections literally from the edge of the sand — and offers immediate access to coral gardens, reef fish, sea turtles, reef sharks, and a rich diversity of marine life without the need for a boat. Guests who snorkel the house reef at different times of day over a week-long stay consistently report it as the highlight of their stay. The drop-off into deep water at the reef edge — where the coral wall descends dramatically into the blue — is a significant diving destination in itself.

The Overwater Bungalows

The overwater bungalow — a room or villa built on stilts over the lagoon, with direct ladder access into the water — is the defining luxury accommodation concept of the Maldives. Veligandu’s overwater villas face the lagoon and offer the classic experience: a private deck, a glass coffee table revealing the fish swimming below, and the ability to slip off the deck directly into the turquoise water at any time of day.

The beach villas, for those who prefer a more grounded experience, sit directly on the sand and have private gardens, some with private pools.

How to Get There

Getting to the Maldives

Velana International Airport (MLE) in Malé — see international flight connections under the Maafushi entry. Emirates, Qatar Airways, Sri Lankan Airlines, Cathay Pacific, and many others serve Malé from major international hubs.

From Malé to Veligandu

Veligandu Island Resort arranges all transfers from Malé:

  • By speedboat: The most common transfer. Speedboat from Malé to Veligandu takes approximately 1 hour 30 minutes.
  • By seaplane: A dramatic and spectacular option. Twin Otter seaplanes operated by Trans Maldivian Airways provide transfers from the Malé seaplane terminal. The flight takes approximately 25 minutes and offers a spectacular aerial view of the atoll system.

Seaplane transfers are operated during daylight hours only (approximately 6 a.m.–6 p.m.) and are subject to weather conditions. Guests arriving on late-night international flights typically spend a night in Malé before their seaplane transfer.

All transfer details and costs should be confirmed with the resort at time of booking.

The Best Season

The dry northeast monsoon season (November–April) is the optimal period:

  • Best visibility for snorkelling and diving
  • Calmer seas and more reliable sunny weather
  • January–March tends to be the best diving period for pelagic species

The wet southwest monsoon (May–October) brings more clouds and occasionally rough conditions in the outer atolls, but prices are considerably lower and marine life (including whale sharks and manta rays at certain sites) is often excellent.

The water temperature is 28–30°C year-round — the Maldives is equatorial and there is no cold season for swimming.

Lodging Options

Veligandu Island Resort & Spa is the only accommodation on the island. Room categories include:

  • Beach Bungalow: Direct beach access, private garden, small pool in some categories.
  • Water Bungalow: Overwater with lagoon views, direct ladder access to the water.
  • Senior Water Bungalow: Larger overwater villas with additional space and facilities.

The resort operates on various board basis options — bed and breakfast, half-board, full-board, and all-inclusive packages. Given the island’s remote location (no restaurants or shops outside the resort), full-board or all-inclusive tends to be the most practical option.

Experiences

House Reef Snorkelling

The house reef at Veligandu is the principal activity for most guests. The reef starts within 20–30 metres of the beach in several locations and can be accessed without a boat. Regular reef residents include green and hawksbill turtles, reef sharks (including whitetip and blacktip species), eagle rays, humphead wrasse, moray eels, and a profusion of reef fish. The drop-off wall on the reef’s outer edge is accessible to confident swimmers.

Scuba Diving

The dive centre at Veligandu offers courses (including PADI Open Water certification) and guided dives to nearby sites. The Rasdhoo Atoll is particularly known for hammerhead shark sightings at depth, and a dedicated hammerhead dive at the atoll’s plateau is organised early in the morning.

Excursion to Rasdhoo Village

The nearby island of Rasdhoo is an inhabited local island — one of the relatively rare opportunities to visit a Maldivian community while staying at a resort. The village has local shops, a mosque, and the everyday life of a small island community. Half-day excursions are typically available.

Sunset Fishing

Traditional Maldivian fishing trips at sunset are offered as resort excursions — using handlines in the traditional Maldivian method, fishing for tuna and other species. The excursion doubles as a sunset cruise.

Sandbank Picnic

The resort organises private picnics on temporary sandbanks (small sandbars that appear above the waterline during certain tidal conditions) in the surrounding atoll. A private speedboat trip to a sandbank with a picnic prepared by the resort kitchen, surrounded by nothing but turquoise water, is a quintessential Maldives experience.

Visitors Ask

Is Veligandu suitable for snorkellers (not just divers)? Excellent for snorkellers. The house reef’s proximity to the beach and the exceptional marine life make it one of the best snorkelling resorts in the Maldives. No scuba diving experience or interest is required to enjoy the underwater environment here.

Is Veligandu a quiet island or a party island? Quiet. The island is small, the guest count is modest, and the resort atmosphere is relaxed and romantic rather than party-oriented. It is particularly popular with honeymooners and couples.

How does the seaplane experience work? Seaplanes operate from the seaplane terminal adjacent to Velana International Airport in Malé. Transfers are scheduled and coordinated with arriving international flights. The aircraft are Twin Otters with approximately 16–18 seats. The 25-minute flight at low altitude over the atoll system — the turquoise lagoons, the coral rings, the dots of green island — is an extraordinary introduction to the Maldives’ geography.

What is the best time of day to snorkel the house reef? The reef is accessible at any time, but mornings (7–10 a.m.) and evenings (4–6 p.m.) typically have the calmest water and the most active marine life. Midday light is better for underwater photography. Turtles are most reliably seen feeding on the reef early in the morning.
