Introduction
Koh Lipe is the end of Thailand — the southernmost inhabited island in the country, sitting in the Andaman Sea barely 40 km from the Malaysian border. Its isolation from the main Thai tourist trail (Koh Samui, Koh Phangan, Koh Tao, Phuket) that has defined Thailand’s beach tourism for decades has kept it smaller, more intimate, and, in many visitors’ assessments, more beautiful than the larger, better-known islands to the north.
The island is tiny — barely 4 km by 2 km — and has three principal beaches: Hat Pattaya (Pattaya Beach), which faces south and is the most developed with the main beach infrastructure; Hat Sunrise (Sunrise Beach), facing east, which is generally considered the most beautiful; and Hat Sunset (Sunset Beach), facing west, which catches the afternoon sun and has a more local character.
All three beaches share the fundamental quality that makes Koh Lipe exceptional: the sand is brilliant white and very fine, and the water is a startling shade of turquoise that shifts through multiple blues and greens depending on depth and direction. The Andaman Sea here is notably clear — the island is within the Tarutao Marine National Park, a protected area established in 1974, which has limited the worst impacts of reef damage and pollution that have affected beaches with longer tourism histories.
The coral reefs surrounding Koh Lipe are the other great attraction. The snorkelling from the beaches (particularly Sunrise Beach) and on boat trips to the surrounding islands and reefs is excellent, with genuine coral coverage, good fish diversity, and the visibility (15–25 metres in good conditions) that makes the Andaman Sea one of the finest snorkelling environments in Asia. Dive sites within day-trip range include spectacular reef systems with soft coral formations, shark encounters (nurse sharks, occasionally whale sharks), and extraordinary fish diversity.
The island has no cars and minimal motorised transport — the primary way to move between beaches is on foot or by longtail boat. This constraint has maintained a human scale and a peaceful atmosphere that the larger Thai islands have lost.
Getting to the Beach
Getting to the Region
Hat Yai International Airport (HDY) in southern Thailand, approximately 100 km north of the departure point for Koh Lipe:
- Connections from Bangkok (Don Mueang/Suvarnabhumi via AirAsia, Lion Air, Thai Airways)
- Connections from Kuala Lumpur (AirAsia)
Langkawi International Airport (LGK) in Malaysia, approximately 30 km from the Malaysian departure point for Koh Lipe:
- Connections from Kuala Lumpur, Singapore, and other Malaysian cities.
From the Mainland to Koh Lipe
By speedboat from Pak Bara (Thailand): Pak Bara is the main Thai ferry pier for Koh Lipe. From Hat Yai, transfer to Pak Bara by bus or taxi (approximately 1–1.5 hours). Speedboat journey approximately 1.5–2 hours depending on stops.
By speedboat from Langkawi (Malaysia): A popular route — a 45-minute speedboat crossing from Langkawi’s Telaga Harbour to Koh Lipe. Combines perfectly with a visit to Malaysia.
Arrival at Koh Lipe involves a short longtail transfer from the boat to the beach (there is no jetty pier — boats anchor offshore and longtails ferry passengers ashore).
The island is accessible only during the good weather season (approximately November–May). During the southwest monsoon (June–October), rough seas and strong winds make the crossing dangerous and most services suspend operations.
Best Time to Visit
- November to April: The dry season — the best time to visit Koh Lipe. Clear skies, calm seas, and excellent visibility for snorkelling. December–February are peak months with the most visitors. March–April are excellent with slightly fewer tourists.
- May: The transition period. The weather begins to change; some operators reduce services. The last reliable month for most visitors.
- June to October: The island essentially closes. The southwest monsoon makes sea crossings unreliable and sometimes impossible. Many hotels and restaurants close completely. The island in the monsoon season, with its small population and empty beaches, is beautiful for the very few visitors who manage to reach it.
Sleeping Nearby
Koh Lipe has grown significantly in accommodation quality over the past decade:
- Serendipity Beach Resort: One of the island’s best mid-range options, on the quieter northern coast.
- Idyllic Concept Resort: Well-regarded mid-range with a good position.
- Castaway Resort Koh Lipe: Directly on Sunrise Beach, considered the finest beach on the island. One of the best properties.
- Barefoot Lanta (sister property on Koh Lanta) and various upscale options: The island’s accommodation scene has upgraded significantly, with some genuinely stylish boutique properties.
- Budget options: Numerous guesthouses and bungalow operations, particularly on Sunset Beach and the interior of the island.
What to Do Here
Snorkelling and Diving
The primary activities. Top snorkelling sites include:
- Ko Adang island reef: A short longtail ride from Koh Lipe, the reef around Ko Adang has excellent coral and fish life in shallow water accessible to snorkellers.
- Seven colourful reefs: Boat trips to a sequence of reef systems offer multi-stop snorkelling with increasingly spectacular scenery.
- Dive sites for scuba divers within day-trip range include world-class walls, cleaning stations, and the famous Stonehenge rock formation.
Island Hopping
The Tarutao Marine National Park encompasses over 50 islands. Day trips visit Koh Tarutao (the large island with National Park headquarters, beach, and wildlife including dusky langur monkeys), Koh Rawi, and Koh Hin Ngam (the island of smooth grey stones, a striking natural formation). Boat charter from Koh Lipe covers all of these.
Walking Street (Hat Pattaya)
The “Walking Street” behind Pattaya Beach is Koh Lipe’s main social strip — restaurants, bars, dive shops, and massage places. In the evening it becomes a lively, compact social gathering point for the island’s international visitors.
Kayaking
Single and double kayaks are widely available for hire. Paddling around the island’s coastline, exploring small coves and the mangrove edges, is one of the island’s most pleasant half-day activities.
Good to Know
Which is the best beach on Koh Lipe? Most experienced visitors favour Sunrise Beach (Hat Sunrise, facing east) for the finest sand quality and water colour. Pattaya Beach has more infrastructure and social activity. Sunset Beach is quieter with a more local character. All three are beautiful; Sunrise is generally considered the top.
Is Koh Lipe crowded? By Thai island standards, relatively not — compared to Phi Phi, Koh Samui, or Koh Phangan, Koh Lipe remains genuinely small-scale. The peak months (December–February) are busy, and the island’s Walking Street can feel lively. But the beaches themselves, particularly Sunrise and Sunset, retain a sense of space.
Can you reach Koh Lipe from Malaysia? Yes — the 45-minute speedboat from Langkawi is a popular and well-established route. It allows combination trips: Langkawi/Penang in Malaysia with Koh Lipe in Thailand, without returning to major mainland airports. A stamp-in stamp-out border crossing process applies.
Is the snorkelling better in the morning or afternoon? Generally morning — the water is calmer before the afternoon wind picks up, and the light penetration for underwater photography is good. Visibility is consistent throughout the day if conditions are generally good.
